The Umbrellas of Phnom Penh was a unique structure in Phnom Penh that accommodated residencies for international artists and creatives from different fields of practice including visual artists, video / film makers, dancers, choreographers, sound artists / designers.
The residence programme provided a variety of courses, workshops and collaborations, allowing the invitees the opportunity to also develop their own work in Cambodia. With a network of video production companies, art and sound studios, dancers, performers and visual artists in Cambodia, all necessary resources were put at the disposal of both residency artists and workshop participants.
Those on residency were selected from abroad, not only by virtue of their particular skills and merit but also because of their ability to adapt to and work under local circumstances.
Participants were trained in two strands – visual arts (performance art / video / sound / installation) and dance (Apsara, ballet, contemporary dance). Apart from practical training and discourse, another of the objectives was to provide participants with exposure to diverse art forms; historical and contemporary, within a global perspective.
There was a significant Cambodian input too, with collaborators from local Phnom Penh institutions, artists and communities including ‘Phare Performing Social Enterprise’ and ‘Phare Ponleu Selpak Association’, ‘Sa Sa Art Projects’, filmmaker Davy Chou and through music with the missed singer Chanthy Kak and the music studio ‘Links Music Cambodia’.
The Umbrellas of Phnom Penh operated from a large working space in Toul Kork Phnom Penh, which was suitable for visual art, dance, music and video production.
